EPOC a brief overview

What is it? EPOC stands for Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption. What does that mean? After exercise, (specifically anaerobic) the human body is trying to return itself back to a state of rest. While making this transition the body is taking in more oxygen to help facilitate repair and restoration while also adapting to the exercise that was just performed. EPOC levels are highest after a bout of anaerobic exercise. While studies show that anaerobic exercise burns less "immediate calories" compared to aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercises offer more of a lasting effect once the workout has been completed. How can I use this information? The whole idea behind EPOC runs a little deeper than the short paragragh above. Long stroy short, you will utilize your bodys fat stores more effectively by performing exercises that increase your EPOC levels. A perfect example is a structured interval training regiment. I hope you found some of this information useful. There's plenty more where that came from! (Wink)
